BAGHDAD, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- A civilian was killed and 16 people were wounded on Sunday in attacks by three car bombs and a roadside bomb in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, a police source said.
A booby-trapped car detonated in the district of Sadr City in eastern Baghdad, leaving a civilian killed and five others wounded, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
Another car bomb went off near a mosque in the Shiite district of Obiedi in the eastern part of Baghdad, wounding six people, the source said.
A third car bomb was discovered in Shaab district in northeastern Baghdad, and was defused by explosive experts without casualty, the source added.
In addition, a roadside bomb detonated near a Shiite mourning tent in al-Ghadier district in southeastern Baghdad, wounding five people, the source said.
The tent was set up for Shiite Muslims to commemorate the death of Imam Hussein, one of the Shiites' twelve most revered Imams, who was killed in 680 A.D. and buried in Karbala, some 110 km south of Baghdad.
The Shiite Muslims had already observed the death day of Imam Hussein on Oct. 12, in a ritual named Ashura Day, but they usually continue their mourning till the ritual of al-Arbaeen, or 40 days after the Imam's death which will take place on Nov. 21.
No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attacks, but the Islamic State (IS) militant group, in most cases, is responsible for deadly attacks against Shiite Muslims and crowded areas, including markets, cafes and mosques across Iraq.
Terrorist acts, violence and armed conflicts killed 1,792 Iraqis and wounded 1,358 others in October across Iraq, the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq said.
Many blame the current chronic instability, cycle of violence, and the emergence of extremist groups, such as the IS, on the U.S., which invaded and occupied Iraq in March 2003.
RIO DO JANEIRO, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- The defense team of Brazil's former President Quiz Inacio Lula da Silva said Wednesday the United Nations accepted their complaint against Judge Sergio Moro for violating Lula's civil and political rights.
Moro is in charge of Operation Car Wash, a probe into the corruption scandal involving the state-controlled oil company Petrobras, and Lula was accused of money laundering and corruption in connection with the Petrobras investigation.
Lula's lawyer Cristiano Martins said Moro is persecuting the former President for political reasons in an attempt to pin on him crimes he did not commit.
Martins said the UN High Commissary for Human Rights admitted the case against Moro and the Brazilian government was ordered to present information on the case. The government has a two-month deadline to provide related information.
Lula's defense filed the case in the UN in July. Moro is accused of violating Lula's rights and acting arbitrarily in the investigation, such as forcibly taking Lula to testify, even though he had not refused to testify before, the defense said.
In addition, illegally recorded conversations between Lula and then-President Dilma Rousseff were leaked to the press, even though presidential conversations should never be handled by a regular court like Moro's, as the president has the privilege of being attended by the Supreme Court under Brazilian law.
"We advanced another step in the protection of the former president's individual rights with the UN's acceptance of our registration. It is especially important to know that from now on, the UN will be taking note of the gross violations committed against Lula every day," Lula's defense said.
DUBAI Fjallraven Kanken Bag Sale , Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- Feng Shanshan calls Dubai her "lucky place" for a reason as she turned the Majlis course into her personal playground on 'Pink Friday', racing to a commanding five-shot lead going into the final round of the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters at Emirates Golf Club.
Two shots in front overnight, the world No. 6 carded a 67 for the third day on the trot to reach 15 under for the tournament as her nearest challenger Dame Laura Davies slipped to 10th after a third-round 77.
Feng racked up five birdies in machine-like fashion on the front nine before dropping a shot at the 12th - her first in 48 holes. She made another bogey on the 15th, but rebounded with a birdie on the 17th, inexorably moving closer to winning a record third time in Dubai.
"Today, I think the front nine was really good. I created many birdie chances and a lot of them were really close. The back nine, well, I made a couple bogeys there. I think it just happens. It's normal because the day was a little bit more wind. So human beings, we're going to make mistakes. After that, I was happy that I made birdie on the 17th," Feng said.
