SYDNEY， March 7 (Xinhua) -- A female backpacker from Britain narrowly escaped with her life after being held hostage for eight weeks in the Australian state of Queensland.


The woman， 22， was discovered after a routine traffic stop on the Warrego Highway at Mitchell on Sunday， with serious facial injuries， while her male attacker hid in the back of the vehicle.


Police say the man met the victim three months ago， with both deciding to go on a road trip together， a trip that quickly turned sour.


The man faced court on Monday to answer a litany of charges， including four counts of rape， four counts of strangulation， eight counts of assault， and two counts of deprivation of liberty， as well as charges relating to drugs.


It has been alleged that the man held the woman against her will between January 2 and March 5 of this year.
