According to S&P Capital IQ, overall earnings are expected to grow by 6.2 percent in the second quarter. Earnings in the first quarter rose by approximately 15 percent.

With no major data due out on Monday, market participants also kept an eye on the oil prices. U.S. crude rose 5.2 percent last week and started the week hovering around 46 U.S. dollars a barrel. Over the past three months, oil prices have fallen about 12 percent as global oversupply concerns weighed on the market.

Last week, all three major indices posted sharp gains as investors digested a batch of economic data from the country and Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen' s latest testimony. The Dow, the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq went up 1.04 percent, 1.41 percent and 2.59 percent, respectively.

PARIS, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- Former economy minister Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday announced he will be a candidate for the next year's presidential election.

"I'm ready. I am a candidate for the presidency of the Republic because I believe that we can succeed, that France can succeed," Macron said.

"This decision is the fruit of an intimate and deep conviction," he added.

Denouncing a blocked political system and "obsolete rules," the former investment banker called on "all women and men of good will, those who believe in freedom and progress" to act in a bid to "to bring France into the 21st century, to make the country recovering."

"In a few months on the occasion of the presidential election, an opportunity is offered to us. The responsibility of the president of the Republic is immense and I am aware of it," he told reporters.

Macron, 38, said he was joining the race to the Elysee Palace as an independent candidate and campaigning for "hope" and "fight for all of France."

The pro-business contender joined the Socialist government in August 2014 to replace ousted economy minister Arnaud Montebourg. Two years later, he quit his post to focus on his political career.

He has never held an elected post. He disclosed his political ambition after creating his own political movement "En Marche" (On the Move) in April, vowing to lead the movement "to 2017 and to victory."

A recent Elabe survey showed that Macron would garner 27 percent of votes in the first round of election, while Hollande who is projected to collect 12 percent of the vote.

MELBOURNE, March 18 (Xinhua) -- Red Bull Racing's Australian Formula 1 driver Daniel Ricciardo has played down expectations of his team's performance at his home Grand Prix, saying that Mercedes and Ferrari were going to have "strong" seasons.

Earlier this week, Ricciardo even went as far as to announce he would perform a 'nudie run' if he managed to clinch victory in Melbourne, something he said was purely to highlight the improbability of it happening.

"I said I'd do a nudie run (if I win), but what I'm saying is it is unrealistic," Ricciardo said in a television interview in Melbourne on Friday.

"Mercedes and Ferrari are strong. Sure, they could crash, blow up, whatever, but if the race goes as normal then we're not on their pace at the moment."

Instead, Ricciardo said Red Bull Racing was managing its expectations for 2016, in an effort to best have them competing with the superior Mercedes and Ferrari outfits by 2017.

"I still expect Mercedes to come out, be the favorites and probably win the first few races, but I think Ferrari will probably get a bit closer and steal a few victories from them this year. I've heard good things about their car this year," Ricciardo said.

"Last year I thought Mercedes couldn't get further away (and) they did, but this year I think we can start pegging it back.

"We know this year isn't going to be an assault on the championship but hopefully it puts us in good shape for 2017 and that's all we can ask for."
