WUHAN, May 9 (Xinhua) -- Flights at an airport in Shennongjia, a primitive forest in central China's Hubei Province, were launched for the first time this week despite lingering concerns over its environmental impact.

The airport, on an open grassy plain surrounded by forest-covered mountains at an altitude of 2,580 meters, received its first flight at 12:40 p.m. Thursday, an Airbus A319 from Shanghai.

A flight from Shennongjia to the provincial capital of Wuhan takes 50 minutes, compared with an eight-hour road trip, according to Ma Chao, spokesman of Shennongjia Forest District government.

Costing 1.13 billion yuan (about 180 million U.S. dollars), the airport is capable of handling over 2,900 flights, 250,000 passengers and 1,130 tonnes of cargo a year, Ma said.

Dubbed "Noah's Ark" for animals and plants in the glacial period,Shennongjia is home to more than 3,700 species of plants and at least 1,050 kinds of animals. At least 40 of its plant species and 70 kinds of animals are under state protection.

As early as 1990, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization added Shennongjia to its World Network of Biosphere Reserves.

Construction of the airport began three years ago and since then criticism has not been far away because mountains and karst caves were destroyed to make way for the facility.

A local driver said he was concerned about potential geological disasters the airport might bring. "A house was buried by a mudslide last summer, and it allegedly had something to do with the airport," he told the magazine China Weekly.

Yang Chongguang, a researcher with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, also voiced opposition. "I disapprove of such a big change. It's hard to say whether it will bring development or destruction," he said.

The district is a well-known tourist destination, with tourism contributing more than 60 percent to its gross domestic product (GDP).

Responding to the doubts, Ma said the project was approved by the State Council in late 2008 and has an environmental impact report compiled by the Environmental Development Center of the Ministry of Environmental Protection.

The report, which Ma said was posted on the district government's website in October 2013, concluded that the airport would have an "acceptable" impact on the surrounding environment, including air and water, as long as effective environmental measures were adopted.

It noted that the construction was "feasible" as long as measures suggested in the report are well implemented.

The measures include helping protect vegetation around the airport, proper disposal of wastewater and garbage, as well as minimizing the impact on animals, especially during breeding season.

The Shennongjia Forest District includes a national nature reserve, famous for being home to the rumored elusive creature known in China as the "Yeren", or "Wildman" in English. It is also referred to as "Bigfoot" after the legendary North American ape-man.

More than 400 people have claimed sighting Bigfoot in the Shennongjia area since last century, but no hard evidence has been found to prove the creature exists.

The airport is believed to be part of the local government's efforts to improve travel services in the nature reserve, which was named a national 5A-Class Scenic Spot, the country's highest official ranking of scenery spots, by the National Tourism Administration in 2012.
