BEIJING, July 23 (Xinhua) -- China's national observatory on Sunday renewed a blue alert for typhoon Sonca, which is expected to hit south China's Hainan Province or the Beibu Gulf.
At 6 p.m. Sunday, the eye of Sonca was above the South China Sea some 235 km to the southeast of Sanya City, Hainan, packing winds of up to 18 meters per second, the National Meteorological Center (NMC) said in a statement.
The NMC forecast it will move northwestward to make landfall on Hainan from Monday evening to Tuesday morning or skirted the province and entered the Beibu Gulf to reach the northern coast of Vietnam.
Affected by Sonca, Guangdong, Guangxi and Hainan will see torrential rain and gales in the coming days.
The NMC suggested local governments take precautions against possible geological disasters, and ships in affected areas go back to ports.
China has a four-tier color-coded system for severe weather, with red being the most serious, followed by orange, yellow and blue.
DUBAI, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- The United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced Sunday a ban on poultry imports from Saudi Arabia following a reported outbreak of a bird flu in the Saudi capital of Riyadh.
The UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment took the measure following a notification from the Gulf Early Warning Centre of the outbreak of a "highly contagious" strain of bird flu, H5N8, in the Azizia market in Riyadh, the UAE state news agency WAM reported.
The precautious measures include a ban on the import of all kinds of domestic and wild live birds, ornamental birds, chicks, hatching eggs and non-heat-treated wastes from Saudi Arabia, said the report.
A ban on the import of poultry meat, non-heat-treated products and table eggs from the affected area in Riyadh was also implemented.
The UAE ministry added that the untreated products shipped prior to Dec. 1, 2017 are still permitted following a verification of the accompanying certificates. The heat-treated poultry products - meat and eggs - are also cleared for importing from Saudi Arabia.
In doing so, the ministry hopes to prevent the bird flu virus' impact on the country's poultry health and safety, in addition to protecting public health and well-being, it added.
Bird flu strains have hit poultry flocks in several countries across the world in recent years, with some types of the disease causing human infection and deaths.
Saudi Arabia in earlier this year imposed restrictions on poultry imports from some infected countries such as Bulgaria, in an effort to prevent the virus from spreading.
NAIROBI, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- Isaac Kalua, the Kenyan who successfully delivered the 2007 World Cross Country Championship when Kenya hosted the event in Mombasa, has told the bid committee to prepare for an arduous task ahead in preparing to host the 2017 World Youth Games, which Kenya won the rights to stage last week.
"An arduous task awaits the board that will be selected to manage the games. It's a difficult task no doubt, but surmountable," Kalua, the CEO of the event when Kenya hosted its first ever global competition, told Xinhua.
The bidding process for a global sports event, according to the Mombasa experience, is a detailed undertaking whereby the representative body must demonstrate to the parent sporting body the capability to organize and stage the event, usually referred to as the "bid process".
"The main purpose of the bid process is to among other reasons demonstrate that the bidding organization has the capability and resources to stage the event and provide additional reasons why the bidding organization should be selected over other rival bidders," Kalua explained.
"However, the most important condition should be proof of government support and commitment that it will partly finance the games," Kalua added.
In the case of the Mombasa event, the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) requested for government approval of 2 million dollars as part of the bargain before presentation of the bid before the IAAF council members before they took the vote.
After the IAAF gave the country a clean bill of health, Kenya set up a board made up of the committees of fundraising, finance and administration, logistics, marketing and commercial, media, technical, medical and security.
In 2007, Kenya used Paul Tergat and John Ngugi, who have each won five world cross country titles, as bid ambassadors for the games.
The 2017 bid team was led by Kenyan Cabinet Secretary at the Ministry for Sports Culture and the Arts and included Nairobi County government and Athletics Kenya officials.
