Late leader’s legacy remembered at top level on 100th anniversary of birth
China on Friday held a commemoration symposium at the central government level to honor late Party chief Hu Yaobang Mens Jordans 6 Gatorade Cheap , which analysts said indicates the Communist Party of China (CPC)'s determination to further carry out reform.
General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee Xi Jinping delivered a speech at the symposium, which was held at the Great Hall of the People in central Beijing, to mark the 100th anniversary of Hu's birth.
All seven members of the standing committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee attended the symposium, which was chaired by Liu Yunshan, a member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee.
Hu, who was elected as general secretary of the CPC Central Committee in February 1980, passed away on April 15, 1989 and was credited with pushing for reform. Hu helped re-establish the Party School of the CPC Central Committee after it was suspended during the Cultural Revolution (1966-76).
In 2005, a similar high-level symposium was held in the Great Hall of the People to commemorate the 90th anniversary of Hu's birth, media reports said.
Xi spoke about Hu's achievements, saying that Hu had made outstanding contributions to national independence and liberation, socialist revolution and construction, exploration and the creation of socialism with Chinese characteristics.
Hu was extolled as a loyal communist soldier, great proletarian revolutionary and statesman, and and a prominent leader of the Party.
"To commemorate Hu Yaobang is to learn from his noble character, which was based on keeping the faith and being dedicated," said Xi.
"The highest ideal is communism," Xi quoted Hu as saying. Xi asked all CPC members to have similar firm faith and ideals, and be more confident in Chinese socialist roads, theories and systems.
Hu stressed that CPC members must regard "seeking truths from facts" as a basic requirement, and attempts to abandon this will result in setbacks, Xi said.
Xi called on all Party members to stay true to their integrity, to promote a clean political environment and social ethics, and to win the trust and support of the general public.
Speeches and writings
Other commemoration activities included a TV documentary series, a photo album and a collection of speeches and works by Hu.
Published by the People's Publishing House, the book includes writing by and speeches of Hu from 1952 to 1986, many published for the first time, according to the publisher's statement issued on Thursday.
Among the speeches was one delievered by Hu in 1983 in which he pressed for modernization efforts and reform.
These works highlight ideas put forward by Hu for China's development as well as his "noble character, [and] just and clean work style," the statement said.
The five-episode TV series, simply titled Hu Yaobang, will be broadcasted on State TV channel CCTV from Friday. The documentary, jointly produced by the Party History Research Center (PHRC) of the CPC Central Committee and the China Central Newsreel and Documentary film studio, highlights Hu's "important contributions to China's revolution, construction and reform drives," the producers said.
The photo album, compiled by the PHRC, contains 496 precious pictures of Hu and feature Hu's lives and works, characterized by "noble spirits" and historical achievements.
"The high-profile commemoration has indicated a strong determination of the Party to push forward reform, which has been hailed by the late leader and is also in accordance with the central government decision," Zhang Xi'en, a professor of political science at Shandong University, told the Global Times.
Prior to the central government-level commemoration, media coverage commemorating Hu began to increase.
On Monday, the press office of the Party School held a symposium to commemorate of Hu's 100th birthday. Hu's elder son Hu Deping and heads of the Party school attended the event along with scholars and members of the media, news site youth reported.
The CPC Central Committee-affiliated Study Times newspaper also ran an article on October 29 entitled "Officials should read 200 million characters' worth of books," urging officials and leaders to learn from Hu by reading more books, which could help them build political morality.
Professor Cai Xia of the Party School wrote, in an opinion published on the news site caixin on Thursday, that Hu's contribution to cohesion of society and Party has paved the way for later generation's modernization efforts. "His efforts to unite different forces within the Party also made ground-breaking achievements in strengthening Party construction."
