TORONTO -- Former Ontario premier David Peterson helped bring the 2015 Pan American Games to Toronto. Marcus Martin Jersey . His next task is to take things to the finish line. Peterson, who served as premier between 1985 and 1990, was named chair of the TO2015 organizing committee Monday afternoon. He replaces Roger Garland, who has held the job since 2009. Peterson was the chair of Ontarios bid to get the Games. He was joined by Garland, chief executive officer Ian Troop and dozens of TO2015 staffers for the announcement at the organizations downtown office. Peterson, who was nominated to the position by Premier Kathleen Wynne, thanked Garland for his efforts in creating a strong foundation over the last few years. "Think of it this way -- Roger was the cake and Im the icing," Peterson said with a smile. "And I get to do all the good stuff. Roger has done all the donkey work. He has put this organization together on a sound financial basis, great people have been hired across the board, all the wheels are moving together and in a very thoughtful way." The Pan Am Games will be held from July 10-26, 2015 in several communities across the province. The Parapan Games are slated for Aug. 7-14. Garland didnt offer specifics on reasons for his departure and did not take questions from reporters. A news release said he would be moving on to new opportunities. "In short, now is the perfect time for transition," he said in a statement. "Ive accomplished what I set out to do. To use an appropriate sports analogy, Im passing the baton for the next racer to carry for the final 100 metres of the relay race, confident that Ive done my part to ensure the teams success." Garland told staffers in attendance there was a "lot of disappointment" but that there were many good things about the transition. "I think there are those phases of grief you go through when youve lost something and yet there is a positive side to it," he said, adding hes looking forward to spending more time with his wife, who will retire at years end. Garland, who plans to formally step down at a board meeting on Thursday, also said that hes very proud of the organizing teams effort. "Weve built an organization and a structure and a plan to put on the biggest Games in this countrys history and weve done it with a lot of constraints and a lot of discipline," he said. "So all I can say is I am just in awe of what you folks have done and Ive got enormous confidence going forward that youre going to continue to do what youve done up until now." Peterson is a senior partner and chairman of Cassels Brock LLP, where he practises corporate and commercial law. This is a welcome back to the nationals for six-time Canadian Medalists Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje. Kaitlyn was injured last year in practice a month before nationals and so was unable to compete. Her injury, a broken fibula, was so severe the doctors even ruled out the possibility of competing at Worlds last March. Three months to the day after the accident and after methodically and relentlessly working through the pain of rehab, Kaitlyn and Andrew competed and finished 5th at The World Championships and once again showed us how they can grow stronger and more resilient throough adversity. Kevin Reynolds, the quad king, who had a break-out season last year finishing 5th in the world, has not competed this year due to boot problems. There are seven guys going after three spots. Patricks got one of those spots and Kevin certainly has the credentials to earn the second, but he will be pressured in this, his first competition of the season. Canadian ladies champion Kaetlyn Osmond is feeling the same kind of heat as hers has been a season of untimely injuries which have cost her valuable training time. Six women fighting for two spots. Kaetlyn has posted by far the best scores to date, but she will contend with a Canadian Champion and some young and feisty up-and-comers and so will have to be on her toes, so to speak. This is about dreams coming true and bitter disappointments. About your last four years being defined by the next four minutes. About becoming a champion, a medalist, an Olympic team member or going down trying.
